Overview

The Faculty of Computer Sciences proudly presents an Intra-University Debating Competition centered on one of the most profound questions in philosophy:

How do we know what we know?

This debate explores the intellectual confrontation between two foundational epistemological traditions — Empiricism and Rationalism. These schools of thought have shaped centuries of philosophical, scientific, and intellectual development.

Participants will critically examine whether knowledge originates primarily from sensory experience or from reason and innate intellectual structures.

This competition aims to cultivate analytical thinking, structured argumentation, and scholarly dialogue among students across all departments.

Background of the Topic

The debate between empiricism and rationalism forms the core of epistemology — the branch of philosophy concerned with the theory of knowledge.

  • Empiricism argues that knowledge is derived from experience and sensory observation. It emphasizes experimentation, evidence, and observation as the foundations of understanding.

  • Rationalism maintains that reason and logical deduction are the primary sources of knowledge. It asserts that certain truths exist independently of sensory experience.

This competition invites participants to explore, defend, and challenge these philosophical positions in a structured academic format.

Objectives of the Competition

The event is designed to:

  • Promote critical and independent thinking

  • Strengthen logical reasoning and analytical skills

  • Enhance public speaking and argumentation abilities

  • Encourage respectful intellectual discourse

  • Connect classical philosophy with modern academic inquiry

Debate Format

Why This Debate Matters Today

In an era shaped by scientific advancement, artificial intelligence, and information overload, understanding the foundations of knowledge is more important than ever.

This debate challenges participants to critically evaluate how beliefs are formed, how evidence is interpreted, and how reasoning shapes modern thought.

It is not merely a philosophical discussion — it is a reflection on how we construct truth in contemporary society.
